Huge comets centaurs threaten Earth
According to The Guardian, Astronomy journal published the results of a research showing that Earth is under a big threat. It can collide with huge asteroids and comets. Another danger is giant space ‘centaurs’.
According to scientists, centaurs are big asteroids situated between the orbits of Jupiter and Neptune. These heavenly bodies are in-between the asteroids of the main belt, situated between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, and bigger objects of the Kuiper belt.
Besides, the orbits of Neptune, Saturn, Jupiter and Uranus are crossed by the movement of these huge centaurs. However, their gravity fields are so powerful that the asteroids break up forming smaller comet-shaped bodies.
Centaurs weigh mach more than the asteroids of the main belt. These space objects consist of ice and dust and measure 60-100 km in diameter, having unstable elliptical orbits. Over the last 20 years scientists have discovered around a hundred of such objects. Astronauts claim that once in 40-100 thousand years the Earth risks hitting these heavenly bodies.
Because of their weight and diameter, centaurs are much heavier than all the asteroids that have ever hit the Earth. Their debris may bombard our planet for 100 thousand years,
For now astronauts and scientists are carefully observing these dangerous space objects. New research will be published as soon as there are results
