The government of Catalonia declared independence referendum
The President of Catalonia, Artur Mas, has signed a decree on holding on 9 November referendum, which will be the question of the independence of this region of Spain.
The government of Catalonia want to hold a referendum like the one that just took place in Scotland, but Madrid does not support this idea.
The Prime Minister of Spain Mariano Rajoy has said he will do everything to prevent the holding of this referendum. The Autonomous region of Catalonia, whose capital is Barcelona, is one of the most developed industrially and prosperous regions of Spain. There is also the strong position of the nationalists.
September 19 legislative Assembly of Catalonia overwhelmingly voted for the referendum, which the local authorities are denoted by the term “consultation”. The Spanish government believes that such a referendum would violate the Constitution.
Prime Minister Rajoy is expected to hold about this special Cabinet meeting next week and will probably pass on this issue for consideration by the constitutional court.
